Lavender Weeding Robotization: How to Save 1.5M ₽ on 50 ha
Essential oil crops cannot be treated with chemicals — but they can with a robot. We break down the market, global experience and the plan of a Crimean engineering company to launch a weeding robot.
Essential oil crops — lavender, sage, rose — cannot be treated with chemical herbicides: any “chemistry” gets into the essential oil and kills its market value. This means the only way to fight weeds is manual or mechanical weeding. And this is a serious pain point for Crimean farms: about 800 ha of lavender in the region, each field needs to be weeded 3–4 times per season.
Why this is a problem right now
- 800 ha of lavender in Crimea
- 3–4 times per season — mandatory weeding
- 120 person-hours per hectare per season (at an average rate of 350–600 ₽/h)
- ~2.1M ₽ in salary costs per 50 ha
- Average age of a worker — 55+ years, young people don’t go into it
Global experience
- Carbon Robotics (USA) — LaserWeeder third generation. Neural network recognizes each seedling with millimeter precision, CO₂ laser burns out the weed’s growth point in 30 ms. Productivity — 200,000 weeds per hour.
- Hg LaserWeeder (China, 2025) — 32 laser heads, 24/7 operation, dynamic power adjustment.
- Pixelfarming Robotics (Netherlands) — Robot One for organic farms.
Our solution: AgroBot for Crimea
Platform. 4×4 wheeled base with RTK navigation (±2 cm). Already tested on vineyards and terraces.
Vision. Stereo cameras + spectral sensor + neural network trained on Crimean weeds: Crimean wormwood, couch grass, Bermuda grass, goosefoot, purslane. Each has its own spectral profile in the near-infrared range.
End-effector. Hybrid: rotary brush for inter-rows (cheap, reliable) + optional laser module for spot treatment inside the row.
Economics for the farm
| Parameter | Manual weeding | Robot |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per 50 ha/season | 2.1M ₽ | 1.4–1.8M ₽ (with amortization) |
| Speed | 0.3 ha/day (crew of 30) | 1.5–2 ha/day (1 robot, 16 h) |
| Weather dependency | High | Low (works in drizzling rain) |
| Quality | Uneven | Stable |
Payback — 1.5–2 seasons at full load. After that — pure savings and independence from seasonal workers.
What we need from you
If you grow lavender, vineyards, essential oils or row crops — we need your fields for a 2026 pilot. One visit for 2–3 days in Bakhchisaray district or Simferopol — and we’ll collect a dataset for Crimean weeds together.
Contact us — we’ll tell you more and agree on the visit date.
